The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a HUGE event that lasts for nearly three weeks.
During the day there's a huge carnival with just about everything you can imagine. There's also a huge livestock show inside the arena as well as shopping and a myriad of other things of which I don't know about! I think it would take 4 days and $1,000 to do everything and eat everything. My splurge was a funnel cake...I love funnel cakes! But you could also get any cuisine and anything fried that you can imagine!
This was the first time to take Karsten and I wasn't sure exactly how to approach the whole thing. We started with the petting zoo....within about 5 seconds the animals were nibbling our clothes and that was enough for him. I did manage to capture a few photos while carrying him and feeding the animals. The kangaroo was my favorite...isn't it just what you think of as a farm animal? yeah, me neither!
yes, it was a little overwhelming
Then we took a little rest on a bench where Karsten most enjoyed playing with the pebbles in the flower box....he's quite the little naturalist.
Next it was time to walk through the "farm" where they gave the kids a basket and as they walked through the different "areas of the farm" they learned about how everyday things in our lives (such as milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables) come from farms.
lines everywhere....it's just the name of the rodeo game
Love these two boys of mine!
In the Hen House the kids fed the "chickens" and then got an egg to put in their basket
Karsten, who is usually a bit cautious, went straight for these cows. He loved them and couldn't get to them fast enough! I think they reminded him of the Chick fil a cows....this boy LOVES Chick fil a!
Inside the Dairy Barn he got to "milk a cow"
After that Karsten played in the corn box
You know how I love capturing his hands at work!
After our Fun at the Farm we got lunch and then headed home. Next Rodeo season I want to make sure to spend more time at the Carnival and also get tickets for at least one concert!
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a non profit organization that generates over 100 million dollars of revenue each year. It's the world's largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition. It grants scholarships to many young men in women in Texas FFA organizations. It's kind of like New York City's New Years Eve celebration, except it lasts 20 days! It's this city's signature event!
